Bookings are now being taken for upcoming Forest School Leader Level 3 courses in York and Durham. See training courses for dates.
A new course All Things Wild will offer adults with learning disabilities the chance to enjoy being out in nature and learn some woodland skills. We'll be running sessions throughout February and March 2012 in the woodland at Northdale Horticulture, Northallerton.
The Yorkshire Dales Forest School Project has been awarded a grant from the Sustainable Development Fund. In November 12 adults, all who work with children or young people in the National park area, started their Forest School Leader Level 3 training course at the Dales Countryside Museum, Hawes and Freeholders Wood, Aysgarth and will each be running a Forest School programme early in 2012. The Sustainable Development Fund is managed on behalf of the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority by the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust.
What is Forest School?
At Forest School children learn in the woods on a regular and sustained basis. They learn about the natural environment and the sustainable use of woodland resources, and are encouraged to develop an awareness of the natural world and learn to appreciate and be responsible for it.
As a learning environment it provides challenging and enjoyable experiences across all areas of learning and development. Learning is achieved through play, exploration and discovery, as well as the teaching of skills, with a mix of adult-led and child-initiated activities. Sessions can be linked to learning in the classroom and the approach is used to meet the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage and the National Curriculum. Forest School is organised and run by qualified Level 3 Forest School Leaders.
Forest School is an inspirational process that offers children, young people and adults, regular opportunities to achieve, and develop confidence and self-esteem through hands on learning experiences in a local woodland environment.
This is achieved through the following principles:
- Forest School is for all children and young people.
- Forest School builds on a child’s innate motivation and positive attitude to learning, offering them the opportunities to take risks, make choices and initiate learning for themselves.
- Forest School is organised and run by qualified Forest School leaders.
- Forest School maximises the learning potential of local woodland through frequent and regular experiences throughout the year, not a one-off visit.
- Forest School helps children to understand, appreciate and care for the natural environment.
